Scenic Trivia & Curious Finds

Clos d’Avignon Vineyard

The Clos d'Avignon is a tiny vineyard nestled within the Rocher des Doms park that provides stunning views of the Pont d'Avignon and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, though despite looking like it has been there for centuries, it was actually planted in the 1990s.

The Clos d'Avignon Vineyard is a small, operational wine-producing plot located within the elevated Rocher des Doms park. Planted in the 1990s, it holds the unique distinction of being the only AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) vineyard situated inside Avignon's medieval city walls.

While the city of Avignon is historically celebrated as the capital of the Côtes du Rhône wine region, it is highly unusual to find an official vineyard growing within the urban center itself. This site serves as a living, cultural tribute to the region's deep viticultural roots and its historical connection to the papacy.

Visitors strolling through the heights of the Rocher des Doms park will unexpectedly encounter this meticulously manicured row of grapevines. The setting is spectacular, offering a picturesque contrast between the lush green vines, the ancient stone fortifications, and sweeping panoramic views out over the Rhône river.

Despite its ancient appearance and prestigious location right next to the Palace of the Popes, this vineyard is a surprisingly recent addition. Planted barely 30 years ago, it is a modern homage rather than an ancient survivor of the papal era.
