Les Halles d’Avignon

Les Halles d’Avignon is a century-old traditional covered marketplace and a lively local landmark famous for its high-quality fresh produce, regional delicacies, and literary mentions by authors like Peter Mayle.

Les Halles d'Avignon is the city's central covered market, located on Place Pie. While the site has been a designated marketplace since the 16th century, the current industrial-style structure was built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to serve as the primary food hub for the city.

This market is the true culinary heart of Avignon. Beyond just a place to buy groceries, it is a vital social institution where local residents, artisan producers, and the city's top chefs gather daily to source the freshest Provençal ingredients and maintain the region's rich gastronomic traditions.

Stepping inside Les Halles is a loud, vibrant, and incredibly fragrant experience. You are immediately surrounded by dozens of bustling stalls overflowing with colorful local produce, fresh seafood, cured meats, massive wheels of cheese, and the constant, energetic hum of locals negotiating and socializing.

Before you even walk through the doors, look closely at the building's northern facade. It is completely covered by a massive, 30-meter-long "green wall" (mur végétal), a living, vertical garden designed by the famous botanist Patrick Blanc that completely transforms the industrial exterior.

Visitor tip: Les Halles is strictly a morning destination - arrive by noon at the latest. For help building a full Avignon itinerary around the market, see our day-by-day planning guide.
