Rocher des Doms Viewpoint
The Rocher des Doms is a scenic hilltop park that offers visitors a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of the historic city center, the winding Rhône River, and the iconic arches of the Pont d'Avignon.
The Rocher des Doms Viewpoint is located within a 30-meter high hilltop park that sits immediately above the Palais des Papes. While the rocky outcrop has been inhabited since prehistoric times, the current English-style public garden was officially established in 1830.
This towering rock is historically significant as the absolute geological core and ancient cradle of Avignon. Before the city spread outward, this elevated position provided early settlers with a crucial natural defense against invaders and, more importantly, a safe haven from the violent, unpredictable flooding of the Rhône river.
Walking up into the park today provides a peaceful, shady retreat from the stone streets below. Visitors will find a beautifully landscaped environment complete with a large duck pond, roaming peacocks, and spectacular, uninterrupted 360-degree views stretching across the Rhône valley to Mont Ventoux.
Beneath the manicured lawns and scenic pathways lies a vital piece of hidden engineering. The solid rock of the hill actually conceals a massive underground water reservoir that was constructed to supply the entire city of Avignon with fresh water.
