Rue des Teinturiers Water Wheels
The water wheels of Rue des Teinturiers are historic landmarks located along one of the city's most picturesque streets, following a tranquil channel of the Sorgue river that provides a serene setting for visitors to explore.
The Rue des Teinturiers Water Wheels are a series of historical industrial paddle wheels located along a narrow canal in Avignon. Powered by the Sorgue river, these wooden and iron structures are the remnants of a thriving industrial sector that operated here between the 14th and 19th centuries.
This street is historically significant as the former epicenter of Avignon's booming textile and silk industries. The fast-flowing canal provided the mechanical power necessary for the city's dyers (teinturiers) and weavers to produce goods that fueled the local economy for hundreds of years.
Walking down this picturesque, shaded street today offers one of the most romantic and atmospheric experiences in the city. The rough cobblestones, the sound of rushing water, and the sight of the large, moss-covered wheels turning slowly in the canal create a feeling of stepping back in time.
At the peak of the city's textile production, this canal was lined with dozens of these massive, working machines. Today, you must look carefully as you walk, because only four of the original historical water wheels remain intact along the street.
